How to Top Wash Your Hair Extensions
Top washing is a method to keep your “leave out” or the hair covering your extensions clean without washing the extensions themselves.
This technique is particularly useful if you want to extend the time between full washes to 3-5 days, while ensuring the top and front of your hair maintains a fresh and clean look.
Step 1: Section Your Hair
Begin by sectioning off the hair that covers your extensions from the rest of your hair. Gently gather and clip this top layer to keep it separate.
Step 2: Create a Ponytail
Pull the remaining hair, including your extensions, into a ponytail. This will keep the rest of your hair out of the way while you focus on washing the top section.
Step 3: Shampoo and Condition
Apply a small amount of shampoo to the top section of your hair and gently massage it into your scalp.
Be mindful not to disturb the extensions. Rinse thoroughly. Follow up with a lightweight conditioner, focusing on the same top section. Let the conditioner sit for a few minutes before rinsing.
Step 4: Rinse and Remove Excess Water
Ensure all shampoo and conditioner is thoroughly rinsed out from the top section. Gently squeeze out excess water from the hair. Avoid rubbing or wringing, as this can cause tangling.
Step 5: Dry and Style
Carefully pat dry the top section with a soft towel to remove additional moisture. Allow your hair to air dry or use a hairdryer on a low, cool setting. Once dry, style your hair as desired. Whether you prefer straight, wavy, or curly, this is your opportunity to create your perfect look.
By mastering the technique of top washing, you can maintain the cleanliness and attractiveness of the hair covering your extensions, while prolonging the life of your overall hairstyle. Keep your “leave out” looking fabulous between full washes and enjoy the benefits of a polished appearance every day.
