Hair Extension Styling Tips

Once the install is done, the everyday habits take over — here's what to reinforce.

The work doesn't stop after the appointment. How a client styles and handles their extensions at home determines how long they last and how good they look doing it. This guide covers the day-to-day habits worth repeating at every visit.

Rough Dry Hair With Your Hands

Getting hair to about 85% dry by hand before brushing reduces stress on wet strands, which are at their most fragile. A brush can help finish the job once hair is mostly dry.

Use Heat Protectant the Right Way

Heat protectant should go on the hand first, then run through the ends of the hair — keeping it hydrated and nourished while avoiding the root and bond area.

Avoid Hair Masks, High-Protein Products, and Moroccan Oils

These can cause protein buildup at the scalp and shift the color of extensions, especially noticeable on blondes. Worth flagging clearly, since these are often products clients already have at home.

Avoid Round Brushes and Ball-Tip Bristles

These styles of brush can stretch, break, and tangle strands. Gentle, purpose-built styling tools are the safer recommendation.

Avoid Heavy Oils and Silicones

Heavy oils and silicones weigh hair down and can leave it looking dull, dry, and tangled. Point clients toward lightweight, nourishing formulas instead.
